Flight Delays, Car Repairs, and Windy Weather: A Week in the Life of Williams Taxis & Tours
Running a taxi and tour service on the picturesque island of St Helena might sound like a dream job to some. The stunning views, the friendly faces, and the chance to introduce visitors to our island’s unique beauty make it rewarding. But behind the scenes, it’s a demanding job that requires constant problem-solving, resilience, and adaptability.
This week has been a rollercoaster for Williams Taxis & Tours, with flight delays, a major vehicle repair, and challenging weather conditions testing our limits. Let us take you through the week that was.
A Cracked Thermostat Housing Stops Our Workhorse
If you’ve ever run a small business, you know how critical your tools of the trade are. For us, our vehicles are our lifeline. They’re more than just cars; they’re the backbone of our business, enabling us to serve customers reliably day in and day out. So when our trusty Ford Focus—the workhorse of our fleet—broke down with a cracked thermostat housing, it felt like a significant blow.
The Ford Focus has been with us through countless early-morning runs, scenic tours, and hospital trips.
It’s built a reputation as a reliable companion on St Helena’s rugged roads. But this week, it needed a little TLC of its own. A cracked thermostat housing might sound minor, but without this essential part, the vehicle couldn’t run, leaving us temporarily short on transportation options.
Fortunately, we have a long-standing relationship with QADR Exporters & Imports SA, a trusted supplier who has come through for us time and again. After identifying the issue on Monday, we quickly reached out to Rafiq at QADR. His response was swift and reassuring. By Tuesday, he had not only replied to our email but also followed up with a WhatsApp call to discuss the details.
Rafiq explained the availability of the part, the costs involved, and the quickest way to get it to us. Given the urgency, he arranged for the part to be sent to a family member in Cape Town, who could then bring it back to St Helena on the weekend flight.
This level of service went above and beyond. Rafiq even went the extra mile—literally—by using Uber to deliver the part to the family member’s address early this morning. It’s this kind of dedication that makes us loyal to QADR.
For anyone on St Helena or elsewhere needing reliable import services, we can’t recommend Rafiq and his team enough.
The repair process is now in motion, and we’re optimistic about getting our Ford Focus back on the road soon. This experience reinforced the importance of having a reliable network of suppliers who understand the unique challenges of running a business in remote locations like St Helena.
Flight Delays and Their Impact
While dealing with the vehicle repair, another challenge loomed large: flight delays. Living on a remote island like St Helena means we’re heavily reliant on regular flights for essential supplies, personal travel, and tourism. This week’s delays reminded us just how interconnected our operations are with the flight schedules.
On Tuesday, the Airlink flight from Johannesburg to St Helena faced an unexpected delay. After taking off and heading toward Walvis Bay Airport, the flight had to turn around and return to Johannesburg International Airport due to unforeseen weather circumstances. For those of us eagerly awaiting this was a frustrating turn of events.
The situation escalated further this morning when the rescheduled flight faced additional delays. We first heard the news during an early home-to-duty run for our customers, thanks to an update from the team at the Mantis Hotel.
Delays like these don’t just disrupt personal plans; they have a ripple effect on businesses, tourism, and daily life on the island. Visitors miss out on pre-planned activities, and locals face interruptions in receiving goods and services.
For us, as a taxi and tour operator, flight delays often mean rearranging schedules, adjusting tours, and dealing with disappointed customers. It’s not just about adapting; it’s about ensuring that our customers still have a positive experience despite the disruptions. It’s a challenge, but one we’ve grown accustomed to tackling with flexibility and understanding.
Weather Woes: Rain, Wind, and Fog
As if the flight delays and vehicle repair weren’t enough, the weather on St Helena decided to throw another curveball our way. This week has been dominated by heavy rain, strong winds, and thick fog—a trifecta of challenges for anyone driving on the island’s winding roads.
The wet and windy weather creates hazardous driving conditions, requiring extra caution to ensure safety. For our team, this means longer travel times, more frequent vehicle maintenance, and an added layer of stress. The fog has been particularly challenging, reducing visibility to just a few meters in some areas. Navigating St Helena’s steep inclines and sharp turns under such conditions is no easy feat.
But we’re committed to maintaining our services, rain or shine. This week, we’ve prioritized vehicle safety checks, adjusted our schedules to account for slower travel times, and communicated openly with customers about potential delays. It’s all part of ensuring that we continue to provide reliable and safe transportation, no matter the circumstances.
Reflections on a Challenging Week
This week has been a reminder of the unpredictable nature of life on St Helena. From mechanical issues to flight delays and challenging weather, it’s been a test of our resilience and adaptability. But it’s also been a testament to the strength of our team, the reliability of our partners, and the support of our community.
We’re grateful for the understanding of our customers, the dedication of suppliers like Rafiq, and the commitment of our team to keeping things running smoothly. Challenges like these are part of the journey, and they only make us stronger and more determined to serve our community and visitors better.
As we look ahead, we’re hopeful for clearer skies, smoother operations, and the return of our trusty Ford Focus to the road. Thank you for being part of our journey, and here’s to a brighter week ahead!
